Although the retirement age in the United States is growing progressively older, improvements in health care have allowed many citizens to have many more retirement years in which they can enjoy doing the things that they love. If you are planning on retiring, then you will want to make some plans that will keep you active for your golden years.

For some people, the years of retirement give them an opportunity to learn a new hobby. Some retirees will begin fishing or playing golf. Others will finally take the time to learn to play the guitar. These hobbies are great ways to keep both mind and body constantly active. If you want to remain active and enjoy retirement, keeping mind and body active are keys to success.

Many other people will use their retirement years as a time to start their own business. Many times by retirement age, homes are paid for and there is a stable income for the home. Business can be just something that you dabble in to earn a few extra bucks here and there. Making a big profit is not a necessity for maintaining a lifestyle.

This may mean taking what was once a Saturday hobby and turn it into a money making venture. If you enjoy wood working, take your creations to holiday bazaars to sell for a little extra pocket cash. For other people, it may mean starting a new career that was not available when you began your first career, like an internet based business opportunity.

Retirement years may also become a time that you can travel. You are no longer limited to two or three weeks per year and can travel to your heart’s content. Perhaps you will choose a motor home or other RV and travel across the nation, stopping to visit long lost friends and relatives or to see the sights you have always wanted to see.

Other types of travel include flying to far away destinations or taking world class cruises. You can see the ocean and visit exotic places, knowing that you will have a clean bed every night and five course meals that will be prepared to exacting standards. Temperatures are moderate and swimming pools and spas are available on board. You can be treated like royalty.

Whatever you choose for your retirement years, it should be an activity that you enjoy. After all, you have spent a lifetime earning the right to spend your retirement years.
